The need for an air purifier in your home may have never been greater. Whether you’re worried about capturing a virus, alleviating allergies, minimizing pet dander, or escaping smog from wildfires, you can breathe easier when you know you have a purifier filtering dust, particles, pollen, allergens, and other undesirable elements undoubtedly floating around in the air.

There are many purifiers on the market, but choosing the one that's right for your home may depend on several circumstances, including the size of your rooms, number and type of pets, and lingering odors from cooking, smoking, and other lifestyle factors.

And you may desire a model that combines the functions of other equipment, like a space heater or fan.

While you must consider your own personal air purification needs, here are our top five favorite air purifiers, including the best reasons to put them to use in your space:

Dyson Pure Cool TP07 ($649.99)

Dyson makes a number of excellent purifiers, so it might be a challenge to decide between them, but we feel the newest Dyson Pure Cool TP07 is the truly premium option, particularly if you are looking to treat a large room.

Super efficient, with different air speed settings — but the breeze is gentle no matter the speed — the Dyson Pure Cool TP07 offers real-time air quality feedback at its base to help you decide on your own fan speed level, or, allow integrated sensors to constantly analyze your air, diagnose pollutants at a molecular level, and monitor and adjust the purification for you.

Wireless RF connectivity set up takes some skill, but once completed, it works with a Dyson mobile app that is also compatible with Amazon Alexa to control and monitor the air quality and remove pollutants.

This model comes in two finishes, sits tall from the floor and resembles a work of modern sculptural art, oscillates nearly 360 degrees, and is designed for both purifying and cooling so it can project air forward or backward according to your choice.

We especially love the dimmed display in night mode!

DREO Macro Max S Air Purifier ($219.99)

When you need super filtration, the Dreo Macro Max S air purifier will have you breathing easier. While it's larger than most and does take up quite a bit of space, this super-charged machine has a quiet brushless motor capable of cleaning 273 cubic feet a minute of air. That's an entire 2030 square foot house in just over an hour. So place it anywhere you want in the room and enjoy fresh air in no time!

The DREO Macro Max S's 3-stage pre+H13 True HEPA+ Carbon Filter boasts that it captures 99.985% of particles as small as 0.3 microns and can remove up to 99.99% of bacteria from the air — including the H1N1 and Staph viruses.

While it can connect with Google Home and Amazon Alexa, an affiliated app also shows users room air quality in real time and allows for purification levels to be monitored and adjusted. But we appreciated Dreo Macro Max S's "Auto Mode" which automatically adjusts to the most efficient speed, extending the life of the purifier and saving energy for long term, low cost usage.

Levoit Vital 200S Air Purifier ($189.99)

Pet owners will absolutely love this option, which captures airborne pet hair and other particles in its own triple-tiered filter system.

Yes, three separate filters will keep your space as fresh as can be. And not only is one of the filters an aerated carbon filter which neutralizes unwanted odors, smoke fumes, and other nuisances, but the pre-filter is washable, which extends the lifespan of the entire system and saves money on purchasing filters down the road.

This Levoit purifier connects to your favorite smart home assistant to control with voice commands, offers real-time air quality on a display that is easy to read with color indicators, and fits unobtrusively in most rooms — it looks like a medium-sized space heater.

Honeywell HPA300 ($269.95)

This Honeywell portable air purifier is basic, but highly effective.

Engineered to help capture up to 99.97% of airborne allergens and particles, with four speed modes — low, medium, high, and turbo — it uses an activated carbon pre-filter to capture large airborne particles and reduce odors. It's also good for pet allergens.

While this one does not have an auto mode, a companion app, or a night mode like some other favorite purifiers, even without these additional features, it's a great value and filters large spaces quickly and effectively.

Some of our favorite features that it does have include a filter indicator which shows you when you need to replace the filter, a dimmer button which turns off the control panel lights, and a timer button which turns off the purifier after two, four, or eight hours.

Bissell Air320 Max Air Purifier ($350.19)

Extra style points have to be awarded to this premium lifestyle air purifier from Bissell that looks like a mid-century modern piece of furniture that just happens to double as a powerful air quality filter.

Elevated off the ground on wooden legs, the Air320 Max also has washable fabric pre-filter on the front of the machine (part of this air purifier's 3 stage filtration which captures 99.97% of 0.3 micron particles and smaller when on lowest fan speed, including pollen, dust, smoke, hair, and pet dander), smooth edges, and a discreet cord wrap in the back of the machine.

In keeping with the retro vibe, this one doesn't use buttons, but instead is controlled by a soft-touch dial to adjust the fan speed, though it can be paired with Bissell® Connect App, which lets you check your indoor air quality, reset and check filter life, adjust fan speed, and activate night mode remotely from your smartphone. There is an automated fan speed system as well.

The size is great for most rooms in the house, and the style can't be beat, but our favorite part may be that every purchase of this product helps save our four-legged friends! When you buy a Bissell product, you support the Bissell Pet Foundation® and its mission to help save homeless pets.
